Hina Nagashi - Wakayama

Hina nagashi, the ritual floating of dolls down to the sea, takes hina dolls dedicated from across Japan, they are placed on three plain wooden boats with wishes written on them, and then releases them into the ocean. This event, which prays for protection from bad luck and calamities in this world, is an ancient ritual held at the beginning of March. It is said that the event comes from this belief, and is linked to the Awashima faith that all nagashi bina dolls flowed to Awashima-jinja Shrine in Kada, which became popular in the Edo period.
