Known to be the roots of Haiya folk songs of more than 40 locations nationwide since the Edo era, and is said to be the “grandfather of Haiya songs.”
Ushibuka flourished as an important spot for maritime traffic, and the southern winds essential for boats to sail north are the origin of the word, with southern winds called “hae no kaze” (Ha-ei~ha-ei-ya~haiya) in Kyushu. It started with sailors and women chanting and dancing concerned about sailing.
As an event that marks spring in Kumamoto, approximately 3,000 participants each year dance through the streets of Ushibuka.
