The festival is held at the Japan heritage sites of Kairakuen and Kodokan gardens in Mito. There are approximately 100 varieties and 3,000 plum trees planted at Kairakuen, and about 60 varieties and 800 plum trees at Kodokan. Tourists flock to the Mito Plum Blossom Festival’s various events such as tasting plum wines from across the country, experiencing the illuminated plum forest of the Night Plum Festival, and celebrating the birthday of “Mitochan,” the mascot of Mito. Kairakuen Station (a temporary station) is open Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays during the festival.
